Taxation Government - Policy Centre withdraws outdated service tax circulars K.R. Srivats
New Delhi May 12 The Finance Ministry has withdrawn as many as 48 circulars and departmental instructions relating to service tax as these have now lost their relevance or become outdated due to changes in laws and procedures over the last decade. The Government has withdrawn these circulars after factoring in the recommendations of the Rustagi report on review of service tax circulars and instructions. The report had recommended withdrawal of 57 circulars and instructions. Last year, the Government had asked Mr Rustagi, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise (retd), to review all the service tax circulars and instructions since 1994 and come up with recommendations to weed out the redundant circulars in the wake of legislative changes in service tax over the last decade. Mr Rustagi submitted his report to the Government in February this year. The report had segregated the circulars, clarifications and instructions issued by the Revenue Department into three categories - to be withdrawn; to be retained and to be modified.
