Mumbai May 13 The `Vision 2020' for the Indian aviation sector and the proposal for a new airport in Navi Mumbai will be taken up for clearance by the Cabinet shortly, said the Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, here on Sunday. Talking to presspersons at a Jet Airways function on Sunday, the Minister said the Indian aviation sector could be in for more competition. Referring to the price of aviation turbine fuel, he said his Ministry is in talks with the Petroleum Ministry and public sector oil companies for rationalisation of ATF prices. If the oil companies and PSUs do not see reason, steps could be taken to "unlock this monopoly", he said. In case the scenario continues, hedging or import of fuel would become necessary, he added.
Vision 2020
On Vision 2020, Mr Patel said, "We have already sent the Vision 2020 statement for the Indian aviation sector to the Cabinet for clearance and I hope it will pass through in a couple of months. "It is in the interest of the sector and the country, and is required to take on the growing competition in the sector," he said. He said by 2010, the country would have first class airports in major cities and the problem was India had not just one or two airports but 80 airports that needed to be upgraded in a short period. On the second airport for Mumbai, he said, the Union Government and State are working on it, and a decision would be taken soon.
