Supply Chain Management Web Extras - Non-conventional Energy TNT keen on using biodiesel in its fleet of trucks K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad May 14 TNT, a leading logistics company, has begun an exercise that is aimed at introducing biodiesel in its fleet of about 1,400 trucks. Mr M. Jayasingh, a senior associate of the Bangalore-based Sun Biosis, told Business Line that his company is at present doing a pilot for TNT, involving four trucks with a five per cent blend with bio diesel. "Now we are going to increase the number of trucks to 25. The biodiesel component too would be tested at a higher 10 per cent," he said. The pilot is being done on trucks on the Bangalore-Nasik route. "This will be expanded to some more trucks on the routes connecting Kolkata and Delhi," he said. At a later stage, it could be extended to all of TNT's fleet. Another leading logistics company TCI too has shown interest in using biodiesel in its fleet. Mr Jayasingh was here to take part in a two-day national seminar on the `Role of vegetable oils as a source of energy for decentralised applications' organised at Administrative Staff College of India. Volvo, another European company based in Bangalore, too is interested to use biodiesel in its operations. "We are likely to begin this exercise next month," he said.
Sun Biosis has also set its eyes on the big software companies, which employ thousands of cabs for transporting their employees. "We are looking at this opportunity and initiated talks with software majors such as Wipro and Infosys," Mr Jayasingh said.
