Our Bureau

Mangalore May 15 The Dakshina Kannada district administration, in association with various other agencies, will conduct a mock drill on chemical disaster management at the site of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd in Mangalore on May 28.

Addressing the presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, said that 13 departments would participate in the mock exercise.

The Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd and New Mangalore Port have been selected for the real-time on-site and off-site mock exercises, he said.

Explaining the reasons for selecting Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district for the mock exercise, Dr Rakesh Sharma, Coordinator, Core Group on Chemical Disaster Management of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), said that there are around 1,700 MAH (maximum accident hazard) chemical units in the country. Of them, 77 MAH units are in 15 districts of Karnataka. Dakshina Kannada district alone has 12 MAH units. Therefore, it was decided to hold the mock exercise in Mangalore.

Earlier in the day, a workshop on `Chemical Disaster Management' was organised. In this, industrial disaster management plan for Dakshina Kannada district was also discussed.
