Centre to sort out iron ore mines allotment to Posco, KIOCL

Ambarish Mukherjee

The State Government has sent its formal recommendations for allocation of mines to Posco to the Centre, officials said.

New Delhi May 16 The Centre has stepped in to sort out the imbroglio over dual allotment of iron ore mines by the Orissa Government to Korean steel manufacturer Posco and public sector Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL).

The issue of allocation of iron ore mines to Posco has landed in the Orissa High Court because some mines that were earmarked for KIOCL have now been recommended for Posco by the State Government.

High-level meeting

The latest step by the Centre follows a recent high-level meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) that was attended, among others, by the Mining Secretary, Steel Secretary, Chief Secretary of Orissa and senior PMO officials.

Following the meeting, the State Government has sent its formal recommendations for allocation of mines to Posco to the Centre, officials said.

Details sought

In order to take an early decision on the State Government's recommendations, the Ministry of Mines, in a letter to the State Government last week, has asked for details on whether all freehold areas have been notified and whether the entire area recommended to Posco falls within the notified area.

Dual allotment row

In view of the controversy over dual allotment of some mines to Posco as well as KIOCL, the Centre has asked Orissa to provide details of MoUs where there is an overlap of areas for grant of mineral licences.

Communication from the State Government is expected shortly, officials said.
