Dairy & Dairy Products Industry & Economy - Rural Development States - Andhra Pradesh Women SHGs set to join hands with AP milk co-ops Our Bureau
Hyderabad May 17 Women self-help groups (SHGs) are set to join an effort to strengthen the supply chain network of the milk sector - the weakest link - in Andhra Pradesh. "They can form the crucial link between the producers, who are handicapped by poor supply chain facilities, and the consumers," said Mr Adhar Sinha, Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh Dairy Development Co-operative Federation Ltd (APDDCF). The State, which produces 191.53 lakh litres per day (LLPD), occupies fourth position in the country in terms of production of milk and milk products. APDDCF, a nodal agency for the development of milk sector in the State, has decided to establish 136 bulk chilling units (BCUs) during the year. It would follow the public-private partnership (PPP) model in implementing the project. In a presentation on heralding a second `white revolution' at a workshop, Mr Sinha said that it would spend Rs 75 crore on this initiative. Proposing a decentralised approach, he said that the model sought to involve the SHGs (under the Indira Kranthi Patham - formerly Velugu) in order to ensure convergence of services at production level. "This will provide a basket of services to increase productivity and reduce distance of movement of milk." Besides ensuring guaranteed market to producers, the model would increase access to milk for the consumers. Mr Mandali Buddha Prasad, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, said that each of the 136 BCUs would be set up at mandal headquarters, covering at least 20 villages. Stating that the Government gives 50 per cent subsidy for cattle insurance, he said that there was a proposal to purchase one lakh milch animals.
