Mumbai-Delhi Garib Rath is most popular

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 17 Among the four Garib Raths — low-cost, air-conditioned train services — launched by Indian Railways, the Mumbai-Delhi service between Bandra and Nizamuddin appears most popular with the highest occupancy levels (95 per cent).

Minister of State Mr R. Velu said this while replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The average occupancy of the Saharsa-Amritsar Garib Rath Express is over 64 per cent, Nizamuddin-Bandra Terminus is 95 per cent, Patna-Nizamuddin is around 55 per cent and Chennai-Nizamuddin is 39 per cent, according to data provided by Mr Velu. The reply however did not mention the period for which these averages were calculated.

The Garib Rath trains provide service at lower fares (up to 35 per cent lower) than the AC III tier train services over the same distance.

The seating capacity per coach in Garib Rath trains is higher compared to AC III tier coaches — in coaches with sleeping facility the capacity is about 20 per cent higher, but in chair car coaches, the capacity is about 40 per cent higher.
