`Documents of unauthorised buildings must be verified'

Our Bureau

Kochi May 18 The trade and industry here have cautiously reacted to the ongoing demolition drive taken up by the Kerala Government against the unauthorised structures in the Munnar Hill Station.

While on the one hand the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, appreciated the Government's initiative against illegal encroachments, on the other, they pointed out that the Government's move would affect the tourism industry badly.

The Chamber President, Mr E.S. Jose, said in a statement that majority of the building owners in Munnar have constructed their structures after availing loans from banks and financial institutions. The banks might have extended financial assistance after carefully scrutinising all the necessary documents of land in this regard.

Plea to Govt

Given the situation, the Chamber urged the Government to take steps to verify the documents of those structures identified for demolition in the next few days. If the documents are found to be fake, the Government should give sufficient time for owners to move out from the areas occupied by them. During the period, the demolition drive should be stopped for the time being.

If these buildings are constructed on the Government land without affecting the environment, the Chamber requested that steps should be taken to return the buildings to these owners either on sale or on lease.
