Coimbatore emerging destination for cardiac care

R.Y. Narayanan

Coimbatore May 18 Coimbatore is emerging as a preferred destination for patients requiring cardiac care. Dr L . Mohanakrishnan, Chief Cardiac Surgeon of a leading hospital, here told Business Line.

He said the four major corporate hospitals in the city - Sri Ramakrishna, GKNM, KMCH and KG Hospital - on an average, perform 120 open-heart surgeries and a similar number of angioplasties in a month.

Apart from Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, patients come from neighbouring States and also from Kolkata came to Coimbatore for cardiac treatment.

Treatment cost cheaper

On the reasons for Coimbatore hospitals attracting patients from far away places, he said the cost of treatment in Coimbatore was far less than even in Chennai.

The patient-doctor relationship also was a factor as to why patients were attracted to the city. As far as success ratio was concerned, Coimbatore hospitals were equal to any other centre which was borne out by the fact that patients from far and near were flocking to the city.
