Rapid urbanisation on the anvil: Jaipal Reddy

Mr S. Jaipal Reddy

New Delhi May 18 The country will witness very fast urbanisation from now as it is on the verge of taking off, said the Minister for Urban Development, Mr Jaipal Reddy.

While speaking at the 13th Annual Convention of Indian Buildings Congress on Thursday, he said that around half of the country's population would live in urban areas in the next couple of decades.

The Minister lamented that the focus of urban development in the past has been space-oriented and not people-oriented. "Most cities have reached a saturation point and cannot accommodate more people," said Mr Reddy.

He said that the Government was giving incentives to States for increasing floor area ratio, a stipulation that restricts the height of buildings.

Mr M. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development said that leaving aside the 63 mission cities that will be covered under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the Government will have to consider the sources of finance and capacity of local bodies for the development of 5098 cities and towns in the country.
