Coal 81 coal blocks identified for allocation Our Bureau
New Delhi May 18 In order to meet the demand for coal, 81 additional coal blocks with geological reserves of about 20 billion tonnes have been identified for allocation to State-owned and private sector companies, according to the Minister for Coal, Dr Dasari Narayana Rao. Addressing the Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry, the Minister said that 41 blocks with reserves of 15.7 billion tonnes have been earmarked for the power sector. The blocks for the power sector have been further categorised into three separate lists on the basis of method of allocation. These are Government company dispensation (10 blocks with 6,072.5 million tonnes estimated reserves), screening committee route (15 blocks with 3,622.44 mt reserves) and tariff-based bidding according to the Ministry of Power guidelines (16 blocks with 6,015.30 mt reserves). The remaining 40 blocks with a total reserve of 4.3 billion tonnes would be considered for allocation for the non-power sector, the Minister added. Of these, the Government plans to offer 17 blocks with an estimated 1,847.75 mt reserves through the Government company dispensation route and 23 blocks with 2,464.23 mt reserves will be made available through screening committee route.
