India urged to join Intl Road Union

A senior official of the Geneva-based International Road Union (IRU) was recently in Delhi to explain to the officials in the Commerce Ministry, Department of Revenue and the Planning Commission and others the need for India's joining the union.

Although the IRU was set up as early as 1948 to ensure seamless movement of goods vehicles all over Europe as part of the exercise to rebuild the war-ravaged Europe, and several countries — including Pakistan — joined it over the past 60 years or so, India is still to become a member.

The IRU official also met representatives of various transport organisations, such as All-India Motor Transport Congress, All-India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners' Association, All-India Transport Welfare Association and others. If the kind of response the IRU official had at the meetings was any indication , then his mission was successful. But whether it will translate into concrete results is another matter.
