Piracy at sea declines in Q1

Piracy at sea in the first quarter of 2007 declined on year-on-year basis worldwide, according to International Chamber of Commerce International Maritime Bureau. The decline was particularly notable in South-East Asia.

During the period there were 41 incidents compared with 61 in the same period of 2006. In South-East Asia, Indonesia recorded nine incidents compared with 19 and only two in the Malacca Straits, indicating how co-operation among various Governments could suppress piracy. There was also significant improvement in Bangladesh with only two incidents compared with nine in the last quarter of 2006.

However, Africa continued to be the disturbed area, with the reports of the doubling of attacks off Nigeria in first three months of the current year, with 40 members taken as hostage. The situation in Somalia has improved, with reports of only two incidents, though ships still are recommended to keep off the coast.
