Multi-axle vehicles grow by 68%


MULTI-AXLE VEHICLE capacity increased by 71.25 per cent last year.

A study by the Indian Foundation of Road Transport Research & Training suggests that in 2006, the number of multi-axle vehicles (25.2 tonnes capacity) and multi-axle trailers (30-49 tonnes capacity) stood at 1,34,061, up by 54,380 over 79,681 in 2005 or a growth of 68.24 per cent. Of this, the number of multi-axle vehicles was 1,11,736 (68,914 in 2005) — a growth of 42,822, or 62.13 per cent.

The number of multi-axle trailers was 22,325 (10,767 in 2005), a growth of 11,558, or 107.27 per cent. Capacity-wise, the increase was as high as 71.25 per cent, at 5.458 million tonnes (mt) (3.187 million tonnes in 2005). The break-ups show the capacity of the multi-axle vehicles increased by 62.13 per cent, at 4.119 mt (2.541 mt), and that of multi-axle trailers by 107.27 per cent, at 1.339 mt (0.646 mt in 2005).
