New airline planned for North-East

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 21 A new airline that would increase air connectivity in the North-East could soon become a reality. The airline is likely to operate 20-seater aircraft to those areas that currently have no flight connections.

At the moment, Alliance Air, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Indian, has the largest network in the region, connecting 11 stations. "There are several cities to which there could be traffic but there are no flights. A committee under the Manipur Governor, Mr S.S. Sidhu, is examining the situation and a decision is expected shortly," sources said.

A final decision on whether the airline would be run by the State Governments or if the private sector will be roped in as partner is yet to be firmed-up, sources said.

In the past, the Government has considered various options to increase air connectivity in the country, including reverse auction of routes on which airlines were not operating.
