PLEA FOR HIGHER IMPORTS: A worker drying arecanut at a farm in Kerala. Arecanut market across the country continues to be dull due to poor arrivals. Traders have approached the court for permission to import arecanut through the Kolkata and Kochi ports, as it is now allowed only through the Mangalore port. The country produces around five lakh tonnes of arecanut worth Rs 5,000 crore from four lakh hectares annually.
