Students urged to make their own choice in selecting professional courses

Mangalore May 22 Speakers at The Hindu Education Plus pre-counselling session urged students, who appeared for CET (Common Entrance Test) and COMED-K (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) test, to choose professional courses they want, and asked them not to yield to any pressures while selecting courses.

Prof G.N. Menon, multi-disciplinary medical specialist and researcher, who spoke on medical stream, said that students need the qualities of stamina, patience and perseverance, if they want to be in medical profession.

On the advancement in medical profession, he said the modern medical science is going hi-tech.

Highlighting the opportunities in dentistry, Dr U.S. Krishna Nayak, former President of Indian Dental Association, said that Dental Council of India has plans to introduce a five-year dental course.

At present, BDS course is of four years duration. After four years of study, the student will have to undergo internship for one year. The new five-year course will not have any internship.

He said the course in new format might probably come into force by 2008.

Speaking on engineering stream, Prof K.N. Lokesh, Head of Civil Engineering Division of National Institute of Technology Karnataka, said that parents and students have to decide the course after mutual discussions, and students should not yield to any pressure. He told them that plenty of job opportunities are there for them in information technology and non-IT sectors.

Prof Krishnaprasad, Head of the Department of Microbiology, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore, also spoke on the occasion.
