UK offers new work system for overseas students

Those seeking UK qualification and desirous of working there may have a reason to cheer.
A recent change in the education system in the UK allows all students completing a degree or diploma for undergraduate or post-graduate programmes of any recognised institution to stay back to work for up to a year.
Under the new International Graduate Scheme (IGS) of the UK, those completing their education on or after May 1 of the current year would be able to take advantage of the provision. Those who have not graduated yet but have their results can also apply under IGS. "Around 19,200 students left India in academic year 2006-07 to pursue education in the UK to join at least 23,000 other Indians who are at various stages of their courses," said Ms Ruchika Castelino, Head-Education UK-India. After working for a year, if the students want to remain in the UK, they can switch to an appropriate immigration category to further their career, provided they meet the relevant requirements. IGS replaces the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme under which the students could stay back for work only after post-graduate courses from top colleges as defined in the UK.
