Global steel production up 7.6% in April

India lags behind with 5.7% growth

New Delhi May 22 Global crude steel production touched 109.3 million tonnes (mt) in April 2007 marking an increase of 7.6 per cent compared with April 2006.

However, the growth in Indian crude steel production during April this year fell below the average global growth rate. Indian crude steel output grew by 5.7 per cent during April this year and steel at 3.7 mt, according to the official figures released by the International Iron & Steel Institute (IISI).

Indian Production

Indian production during April was also lower by 0.526 mt compared with 4.211 mt produced in during March this year. Indian production during January and February this year stood at 3.87 mt and 3.66 mt, respectively.

China produced 40.3 mt of crude steel in April, up 16.5 per cent over the same month last year.

Japanese production stood at 9.7 mt, up 4.1 per cent over the same month last year while production in South Korea increased by 10.9 per cent to touch 4.3 mt, according to the IISI release.

In Europe, Germany produced 4.1 mt marking an increase of 0.5 per cent over April 2006. Crude steel production in Spain stood at 1.6 mt, down 2.9 per cent compared with April 2006.

More countries

France produced 1.8 mt marking an increase of 1.4 per cent. And the UK produced 1.3 mt of steel, higher by 3.9 per cent compared with the same month of 2006.

Russia produced 6.1 mt in April, an increase of 2.8 per cent compared with the same month last year and Ukraine produced 3.6 mt marking an improvement of 6.8 per cent. Crude steel production in Brazil stood at 2.7 mt during April, an increase of 12.1 per cent in the same month last year, the release stated.
