Moser Baer develops Blu-ray disc

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 23 Moser Baer India has developed a high-speed Blu-ray disc that would double the speed of recording data.

The company said that the product was developed in collaboration with OM&T, the R&D arm of Philips, in which it acquired 80 per cent stake in March this year.

"Moser Baer has demonstrated the technology to the Blue Ray Disc Association, whose technical body would evaluate its expertise and then approve. Based on the approval, the company would chalk out its production plans," said sources close to the development.

They added that the given the sanction, the company was likely to manufacture it from its facility at Noida.

However, sources said that since the market for Blu-ray disc in India is at a nascent stage, Moser Baer would be manufacturing it primarily to address the global market, which is likely to touch $6 billion over the coming year.

"While the Blu-ray disc market is witnessing development in the 1x-4x recording speeds discs, the company with its technology has demonstrated benchmarks in 1x-8x discs," said a company statement to the exchange.

"End-users can now have faster media that can record a two-hour transmission equivalent of high-definition quality data in less than 15 minutes."

The next-generation formats would have capacity ranging from 15 GB to 50 GB.
