New Delhi May 23 Reliance Communications took the tariff war in the international long distance telephony segment a notch higher by dropping rates for calls to Gulf by over 36 per cent. The initiative would enable Reliance customers to make calls to all countries in Gulf region at Rs 6.99 per minute with Reliance Global Call Card of denomination of Rs 1,900. The company had earlier reduced tariffs for calls to the US and Canada to Rs 1.99 a minute. Bharti Airtel had followed suit with a similar offer.
Roaming Tariffs
"We are glad to have yet again taken the lead in offering the best value proposition for Reliance customers, who can call Gulf countries at just Rs 6.99 per minute," said Mr S.P. Shukla, President-Personal Business, RCOM. Other operators are offering ISD calls to Gulf around Rs 9 per minute. Reliance said that it was using its FALCON cable system, which has terabit capacity international bandwidth connecting the Gulf region to India and rest of the world. "The Indian population in Gulf, estimated to be in vicinity of 4 million, makes it an important route on the global telecom map. Currently close to 45 per cent of international outgoing calls from India are made to Gulf countries," said a press release. Earlier this month, RCOM launched a range of feature rich `Classic' handsets, bringing down the entry price of monochrome handsets to Rs 777 and of colour handsets to Rs 1,234. RCOM also slashed roaming tariffs by as much as 70 per cent in order to make it affordable for millions of its customers.
