A new Raja

NEW IT MINISTER A. Raja.

Andimuthu Raja has been a Central Minister for many years, but it was only after he stepped into the Telecom and IT portfolio that he is suddenly in the limelight.

At the third anniversary dinner of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Prime Minister's residence, his Cabinet colleagues made a special effort to shake his hand while journalists queued up to introduce themselves.

Raja too was dressed for the occasion, abandoning his trademark veshti and donning a safari suit.

To all queries, Raja had a standard reply — give me 10-12 days to settle down in the new office and then I will be ready to receive you. To journalists, he was more forthcoming though, hinting at some announcement on a reduction in mobile roaming charges on DMK leader M. Karunanidhi's birthday next month.

That was what his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran had intended and Raja might just go ahead and do it.
