Food processing industry worried over new Act

Even as the food processing industry awaits the implementation of Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), it is anxious over some of its provisions.
Fifty two per cent respondents to study conducted by industry chamber FICCI are concerned over difficulty in meeting standards when raw material violates standards. Seventy per cent of the respondents feel there would be inter-ministerial resistance to give up their portfolios as FSSA seeks to unify eight laws. Concern over creation and rationalisation of infrastructure was expressed by 65 per cent respondents.
The chamber feels that since the tiny, small and medium-scale industries do not have the technical expertise to track the regulatory changes, they will find it difficult to identify the procedural and compliance changes brought in by the Act.
The study suggests that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare needs to launch awareness and capacity building programmes. This information can also be made widely available through Web sites, letters and associations.
