Central aid for J&K earthquake reconstruction scheme

New Delhi May 24 The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for additional Central assistance of Rs 635.88 crore to Jammu and Kashmir for long-term reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure in the wake of October 2005 earthquake.

The assistance would come in the form of grant component of Rs 572.29 crore and loan component of Rs 63.59 crore, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting. The Jammu and Kashmir Reconstruction Plan for earthquake-affected areas would be implemented over a period of two years i.e 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Mr Dasmunsi said that today's Cabinet decision would enable the State of Jammu and Kashmir to undertake long-term reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure including housing.
