New Delhi May 25 Taking no chances till the next general elections, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government has extended the current duty-free regime on pulses imports till March 31, 2009.

"As part of measures taken by the Government to check rise in prices of essential commodities, zero duty on import of pulses has been further extended up to 31st March 2009," said an official release of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution here on Friday.

Price surge

Prior to June last, pulses were importable at 10 per cent Customs duty. Following spiralling domestic prices, imports were made duty-free initially till March 31, 2007 and subsequently till July 31, 2007. The latest announcement extended the duty-free facility till end-March 2009.
