`Automation' of SEZ planned

Bangalore May 25 The Union Minister of State for Finance, Mr Palanimanikkam, said on Thursday that the Government plans to extend automation to the Special Economic Zones during the year.

Adoption of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Risk Management System (RMS) has helped both the trade and Government in improving their performance and revenues.

Addressing the 18th Biennial convention of the Federation of Freight Forwarders' Association of India here, Mr Palanimanikkam said the Government plans to extend EDI to 35 more locations and RMS to an additional nine centres and introduce e-payment system to all Customs locations.

Stating that extensive use of information technology by the Customs Department had contributed to the simplification of procedures, the Minister said it also enabled the Government realise higher revenues with better compliance by the trade.
