Saint-Gobain begins career guidance initiative

Chennai May 28 Corporates must form a symbiotic relationship with local administration to achieve greater synergy while discharging their corporate social responsibilities, said Mr B. Santhanam, Managing Director, Saint-Gobain Glass India Ltd and Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry national committee on ER & IR.

Rolling out Saint-Gobain's CSR programme, Mr Santhanam, who is also the Chairman - Taskforce on Affirmative Action (Employability and Skill Building), CII-Southern Region, said there are a lot of gaps in areas such as education, healthcare and infrastructure that need to be bridged.

Saint-Gobain, as its "socially responsible initiative", plans to provide career guidance and counselling to the wards of police personnel in the Kanchipuram district.

Under the programme, the company would identify students who are in the threshold of deciding on what career they need pursue. A psychometric test developed by Careers India Pvt Ltd will be administered on each student to bring out his/her likes, skills.

Based on the test reports, the candidates will be advised on prioritising dominant interest, identifying career path and choosing the institutions and preparing for admission. Select employees of the company will be in constant touch with the candidates and the family members concerned to provide guidance.

According to Mr Santhanam, the company has identified the need for this initiative after several rounds of discussions with the District Collector, Mr Pradeep Yadav, and district Superintendent of Police, Mr A. Amalraj.

That apart, Saint-Gobain also embarked on eye vision screening camps in the neighbouring villages with the help of Prepare Eye Care Hospital.

Mr K. Radhakrishnan, Inspector General of Police, Northern Zone, Tamil Nadu, declared open the Career Assessment and Guidance initiative.
