New Projects TNEB plans 1,600 MW project near Tuticorin Our Bureau
Chennai May 28 The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is proposing to put up a 1,600 MW coal-based power project at Udankudi, near Tuticorin, said Chief Minister Mr M. Karunanidhi today. Speaking at the Chief Ministers' Conference in New Delhi, he said that the State also proposed to augment power generation by 2,500 MW through additional generating units at existing power plants. Mr Karunanidhi also said that the transmission and distribution losses in the State stood at 18 per cent, low compared to the national average of about 45 per cent. This would be further brought down to 15 per cent by the end of the 11th Plan, he added.
Appeals against delay
Mr Karunanidhi also appealed to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to ensure that the first phase of the Koodankulam atomic power project does not suffer any delay and is commissioned by December 2007 as per schedule. "It is learnt that the commissioning of the first unit of 1,000 MW has been postponed from December 2007 to December 2008," he said. "The atomic power project was expected to meet the demand during summer months of 2008 and due to this delay, the people of the State will be put into much hardship."
