For strengthening presence in pain management, diabetes

Mumbai May 29 Elder Pharmaceuticals has forged an in-licensing agreement with US-based bio-pharmaceutical company Cymbiotics in the pain management and diabetes segments, among others.

The Mumbai-based company will sell Pedicur, a cream for dry feet and elbows that usually occur in cases of chronic diabetes; Diaperin, a cream for neuropathic pain and Lepislim, an oral prescription that helps reduce weight. The deal strengthens Elder's presence in pain management, diabetes and derma care.

Cymbiotics' President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Raj Barathur, said that the company already sells the same formulation contained in Pedicur, but under a different brand name (Celadrin) with Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. A similar agreement for the same product is in place with Cipla too, he added. The company has tied up with different companies for better distribution in different markets, he said.

No financial details on the size of the products or the revenue sharing between the different companies were divulged.

Phase III b trials

The company has sought regulatory approvals from the Drug Controller General of India to conduct phase III b trials on Lepislim, he said. The trialwill be done through a contract research organisation, he said.

Cymbiotics is also in the process of shifting about 70 per cent of its San Diego-based research to Hyderabad, he said. This would be operational next month.
