`Raining benefits'

The editorial "Raining benefits" (Business Line, May 29) rightly observed that "vigorous attempts to complete the ongoing projects and ensure expansion of irrigated acreage brook no delay".

It's disheartening that even 60 years after Independence the country has not been able to put in place adequate irrigation facilities for the entire cropped area. It is imperative that every farmer in the country gets continuous water supply for his crops, as this is the main ingredient for achievement of self-sufficiency and production of marketable surplus in the agricultural sector.

Of course, natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes are not under anyone's control and hence it is a must to have an insurance scheme against such disasters to make good the losses of farmers.
