Power: States' role

In the context of the "PM's action plan to end power shortages by 2012," (Business Line, May 29), it may be worth considering the suggestion of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, that the privatisation of distribution need not be insisted on as privati- sation is not always the answer.

Experience has shown that it has failed in curbing power theft, and at times of a severe power crisis, etc. As the Centre has failed to implement mega projects in time, it is time the States are given the leeway to decide the schedule for reforms in the power sector.
