Exports & Imports Import of sensitive items up 10.51% Our Bureau
New Delhi May 30 The total imports of sensitive items, being monitored by the Commerce Ministry, showed an increase of 10.51 per cent in 2006-07. The imports of such sensitive items were worth Rs 18,555 during the year, against Rs 16,789 crore during the previous year. An official release said that the gross imports of all commodities during the year stood at Rs 8,20,568 crore (Rs 6,35,013 crore), growing by 29.2 per cent. "The imports of cotton and silk, spices, tea and coffee have shown a decline at broad group level," the release said. "Imports of edible oil, fruits and vegetables (including nuts), foodgrains, products of SSI, rubber, automobiles, marble and granite, alcoholic beverages and milk and milk products have shown increase during the period." Import of milk and milk products grew by 387.6 per cent to Rs 69.72 crore (Rs 14.3 crore), while rubber imports recorded 184 per cent growth to Rs 781 crore (Rs 275.01 crore). Alcoholic beverages imports rose 30.9 per cent to Rs 161.25 crore (Rs 123.16 crore). Import of tea and coffee dipped by 51.5 per cent to Rs 84.77 crore (Rs 174.67 crore). The imports of sensitive items from the US, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Russia, Cote d'Ivore, Australia, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, Japan, Ukraine and Benin went up, while those from Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Tanzania, Egypt and Argentina reported a decline.
