StanChart opens first all-women branch

Our Bureau

Kolkata May 30 It's the lady's day out at Standard Chartered Bank at the Jodhpur Park branch, its first all-women's branch in India.

With a dozen or so personnel on duty, the branch will aim at providing greater financial self-sufficiency to women customers - the first such outfit by any foreign bank operating in the country.

On the cards are workshops for women on financial planning and investments, said Ms Rajashree Nambiar, Head - Branch Banking, India, adding that the bank will particularly try to provide information related to investments. Working ladies and homemakers, who make up roughly 30 per cent of the bank's customers, are known to be paying more attention to financial planning requirements these days. However, critical information is not easy to come by and the bank intends to play a catalytic role on this front, she said.

The concept of rolling out an all-women's branch will be taken to other cities (where the bank has multiple branches) subsequently, it is mentioned. Considering all SCB branches, the number of women account holders is generally on the rise, leading to greater demand for products tailored to their needs.
