SSI States - Kerala SIDCO plans two modern tool rooms Mony K. Mathew
Thiruvananthapuram May 31 Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) is planning to set up two new modern tool room-cum-training centres and upgrade an existing one in view of the increasing demand for precision tooling and trained manpower in the SSI sector of the State. The SIDCO proposal comes in the context of the wagon factory being planned at Autokast near Cherthala in Alappuzha district. The corporation has to equip itself to provide the required tools and components to the factory. Currently, SIDCO is the manufacturer and regular supplier of precision tools, sophisticated components and assemblies to a host of organisations such as ISRO, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the Indian Navy and Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation, according to officials in the Industries Department. The proposal is to upgrade the tool room at Umayanalloor in Kollam district and set up tool room-cum-training centres at Mannar in Pathanamthitta district and Pappanamcode near Thiruvananthapuram. They will feature CNC machinery for works like shaping, milling, boring and drilling, modern digital equipment for drawing and designing and workstations for 3-D modelling and simulation.
PROJECT COST
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 45 crore; SIDCO will seek a grant-in-aid of Rs 25.50 crore from the Union Ministry of Small-Scale Industries. The State Government or its agencies will chip in with the rest. The centres will focus on production, house service and training activities. The production division will consist of segments such as inward quality control cell, pre-machining cell, conventional machining cell and CNC and special purposes cell. The house service activities will include design of dies, jigs and fixtures as per the requirements of the customers; preparing of assembly drawings; re-engineering of components and assemblies; and product design. The centres will also offer both short-term and long-term training courses in a wide spectrum of tool room disciplines.
