`No mandated green house gas reduction targets'

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 31 India will not take up any mandated green house gas (GHG) reduction targets, the Environment Ministry Secretary, Dr Prodipto Ghosh, has reiterated here.

He maintained this position even as a high-level committee under the chairmanship of Mr R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, has been set up to study the impact of human activities on green house gas emissions in the country.

Informing that the National Clean Development Mechanism Authority under the aegis of Environment Ministry has given host country approval to over 600 projects in the country to pursue further approvals at the United Nation's level, Dr Ghosh pointed out that in terms of number of projects, India is still the country with the largest number of clean development mechanism projects.

Clean development mechanism projects are those Indian projects that earn carbon credits by adopting methods that reduce GHG emissions.

Owners of these projects can sell carbon credits to buyers from developed countries including Japan, Canada, Germany and UK that are mandated under the Kyoto Protocol to reduce green house gases.
