Bangalore May 31 India is in the middle of Dell's transformation. Inaugurating a research and development centre that will focus on enterprise products such as network servers, data storage systems, and software, Mr Brad Anderson, Senior Vice-President, Business Product Group, Dell Inc, said that India was helping to transform the company into its new avatar - Dell 2.0.

The Indian R&D centre will be Dell's second largest after its Austin, Texas centre.

With Mr Michael Dell back as CEO, the $60-billion firm is making changes, beginning with the adoption of direct sales model. Listening to enterprise customers is helping, said Mr Anderson.

"Power and cooling; easier management of systems which are currently complex and need too many tools; and securing data and systems in this age of compliance as well as how to take advantage of virtualisation - are some of the issues in simplifying IT infrastructure. A lot of transformation will be possible with work being done in India on enterprise products," he said.

2-socket server

The first product conceptualised, designed and developed entirely in the Bangalore R&D centre — a two-socket server — will be launched this year, said Mr Kefetew Selassie, Director of Enterprise Engineering and Co-Site Leader, Dell India R&D centre.

The R&D team began three years ago, with a staff of 100 and has filed over 300 information disclosures in the past two years. Now with 600 people, the team is moving into the new facility that covers an area of 2-lakh-sq.ft. and houses 20 labs. It can seat 1,000. Over the past five years, Dell has invested $150 million in its India research capabilities.
