Our Bureau

THE UNION MINISTER for Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, receiving a memento from the CMD of Goodearth Maritime Ltd, Mr P.B. Anandam, after delivery of bulk carrier m.v. Good Providence built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. - C.V. Subrahmanyam

Visakhapatnam May 31 Workers of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) here on Thursday urged the Union Minister for Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, to make all efforts to facilitate the capital restructuring and revival of HSL and for retaining it in the public sector.

The Minister visited HSL today on the occasion of the delivery of the 30,000 DWT bulk vessel, m.v. Good Providence, to the Chennai-based Good Earth Maritime Ltd (GEML).

It is the first among the four of the series being built at HSL for GEML. Six more vessels, of 53,000 DWT, are also being built at the shipyard. The shipyard has so far built 143 vessels.

WORKERS' PLEA

The workers shouted slogans and exhibited placards, much to the annoyance of the Minister, in support of their demands. He did not speak at the function, but merely assured the workers that the HSL issue was under the consideration of the Union Cabinet.

When asked about the proposal to bring HSL under the Union Ministry of Defence, the Minister said he did not want to answer hypothetical questions.

Later, the Union Minister of State for Mines, Mr T. Subbarami Reddy, spoke about the efforts being made to revive HSL. According to the Minister, a meeting would be held on June 5 to discuss the issue. A group of Union Cabinet ministers, headed by Mr Pranab Mukherjee, had been constituted to take a decision on the HSL issue and "no final decision has yet been taken on the proposal to bring the shipyard under the Union Ministry of Defence."

However, he assured the workers that their interests would be safeguarded and there was no need for any apprehensions.
