Navi Mumbai airport project gets Cabinet nod

Our Bureau

New Delhi May 31 The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for the construction of an international airport at Navi Mumbai. The airport is to be developed as a greenfield project through the public-private partnership route.

The need for a second airport in Mumbai has been felt as the air traffic projections are set to rise from 27.5 million passengers annually in 2010 to 40 million passengers per annum in 2015 and peak at about 80 million in 2026. Despite the ongoing restructuring and modernisation of the existing airport, it would be completely saturated by 2013. It was, therefore, felt imperative that the proposed second airport at Mumbai be operational before 2013 to meet the increasing demand as well as uninterrupted economic growth of the region, according to an official statement.

infrastructure

The State Government had proposed a site in Navi Mumbai for the second airport because of the availability of developed infrastructure, power, water supply, roads and communication, minimal environmental disturbance and limited rehabilitation issues.

A detailed simulation study was carried out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to ensure conflict-free operation at both the airports . The simulation study shows that with appropriate procedures in place, simultaneous operation of both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai international airports is feasible, the statement adds.

Estimated cost

The project, to be developed in four phases, is estimated to cost Rs 9,970 crore. During the first phase, which is to run from 2008-12, the airport would have a capacity to handle 10 million passengers annually, while during the second phase (2015-17), the capacity would be doubled.
