Karnataka to discuss cane growers' woes

Our Bureau

Mangalore May 31 The Karnataka Cabinet will discuss the issue of providing relief package to sugarcane growers in the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, said the Finance Department and Cooperation Department have come out with a plan of providing compensation to the growers. It has been proposed to provide Rs 25,000 a hectare as compensation to the growers, who could not transfer their crop to sugar factories.

"We will discuss the issue at the Cabinet meeting," he said.

Sugarcane growers are facing the problem as most sugar factories in northern Karnataka refused to lift sugarcane due to production glut.

Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, Mr B.S. Yediyurappa, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister, also endorsed the view that the Cabinet meeting on Friday will discuss the issue of providing relief package for sugarcane growers in distress.
