`Project Connect' in Dakshina Kannada

Mangalore May 31 Population Services International (PSI) is initiating `Project Connect' in Dakshina Kannada district to create awareness on HIV/AIDS among workforce, according to Mr Joseph Mathai, Director (Corporate Partnerships), PSI.

Speaking at a health workshop for the members of trade and industry, organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here, he said all sections of society, including business establishments, should play an effective role in the prevention of AIDS.

Business issue

Terming HIV/AIDS as business issue, he said the workplace is amongst the most effective platforms to reach a larger audience.

He said that HIV/AIDS affects the core of workforce at the most productive ages. HIV affects business because of loss of skilled workforce and increased absenteeism, resulting in reduced profitability.

High prevalence

Karnataka has a very high prevalence of HIV cases, he said, adding that more than one out of every 100 people suffer from HIV in the State.

Dr J. Prabhudev, District Surgeon and Superintendent of Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore, gave details on the present status of Wenlock Hospital.

Dr John T. Ramapuram, Associate Professor at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, spoke on the occasion. Capt. J.P. Menezes, KCCI President, presided over the workshop.
