The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Mr Santosh Mohan Dev, reviewed the performance of central public sector undertakings, including Hindustan Cables, here today. HCL was the sole supplier of polythene-insulated jelly filled cables to the Department of Telecommunication from 1954 to 1988. The company's profitability was impacted when it came out of the licensed market and entered the free market in 1989-90. IIT, Kharagpur has been asked to conduct a detailed techno-economic study on revival of HCL through manufacture of alternate products. Mr Dev also reviewed the status of Bharat Ophthalmic Glass Ltd, Durgapur, Mining and Allied Machinery Corporation Ltd and Rehabilitation Industries Corporation Ltd.
