Niche Generics Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Unichem Laboratories, has launched Finasteride in the UK, a day after the drug went off patent. Finasteride, used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), was sold by Merck under the brand name Propecia and Proscar.

The patent on the drug expired in the US in June 2006 and producers of generic copies like Cipla, Dr Reddy's and Ranbaxy got into the fray. An industry representative indicated that generic producers would be eligible to make copies of Finasteride in the UK too, now that the patent has expired. The Finasteride market in the UK is estimated to be over $50 million.
