Coal India signs pact with DVC for MAMC revival

Our Bureau

Kolkata June 1 A memorandum of understanding was signed here today between Coal India Ltd and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to examine prospects for joint development of manufacturing facilities for underground mining machinery and handling equipment, and for the consequent revival of the Durgapur-based sick PSU Mining & Allied Machinery Corporation. The MoU was signed by the Chairman of CIL, Mr P. Bhattacharjee, and Mr Ashim Barman, Chairman of DVC, at Writers' Building here in the presence of the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Shift in focus

Speaking on the occasion, CIL officials said there has been a shift in focus from open cast mines to underground coal production. The target was to produce 75 million tonnes of coal per annum by 2011-12, up from 45 mt now. CIL also has plans for 29 new underground mines in the 11th Plan at an estimated investment of Rs 3,650 crore. A DVC official said the power utility has plants in Jharkhand and West Bengal. These plants use coal from Bharat Coking Coal, Eastern Coalfields and Central Coalfields.

To reduce dependence on imported equipment , it was deemed fit to revive MAMC as a source of vital equipment and spares required by coal handling systems and other plants.
