Global tender for box terminal

Dubai Port World, entrusted with the implementation of the Vallarpadam container transhipment terminal at the Cochin port, is likely to float a global tender soon inviting bids from international firms for the construction of the terminal. Inquiries reveal that the selection of the contractor and the placement of the order would be finalised by August-September. The construction of the terminal has to be finished within 15 months.

Meanwhile, work on both road and rail connectivity to the terminal has started. The 17.5-km road connecting the terminal with National Highway 47 will cost Rs 557 crore and is to be funded by the National Highway Authority of India. The 8.8-km rail link connecting the terminal with Edapalli station will cost Rs 245 crore to be funded, interestingly enough, by the Shipping Ministry; its execution rests with Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, though. The completion of road and rail connectivity has to coincide with that of the terminal, it is learnt.
