Port workers' wage deal

The tenure of the old agreement having expired in December 2006, a new wage deal covering an estimated 12,000 employees and workers in the country's major ports has become due for finalisation. Five all-India federations of port and dock workers, one each affiliated to the CITU, INTUC and the AITUC and two factions of the HMS affiliated union, one led by S. R. Kulkarni and the other by Santi Patel, have submitted to the government their joint charter of demand which seeks, among other things, at least a 20 per cent pay hike.

It is learnt that the wage negotiating committee of the Indian Ports Association, comprising chairmen of several ports, the IPA managing director and representatives of the five central trade unions will meet shortly over the preliminary round of discussion. The unions want to conclude the agreement by September. Whether that will happen is of course another matter.
