Letters Pay disparities
This refers to the editorial "Pay disparity" (Business Line, May 28). Pay-scales differ from one organisation to the other depending on the capacity to pay and, hence, reduction of pay disparities may not be practicable. It is possible that some corporates may offer high scales and also give big hikes annually in order to retain talent. In India because of poor quality of education, supply of talents is inadequate in relation to demand. Hence, the focus in the coming days must be on quality education in all States. But many States focus only on regional language education and ignore the talents needed in industry.Once there is abundant supply of talented youth with proven abilities and managerial and leadership qualities, competition will ensure moderation in pay-scales will happen on its own. The Prime Minister has also urged industry to absorb candidates belonging to weaker sections to give them opportunities and to create an inclusive society. For this, too, the solution is quality education for all, including the weaker sections. Far-sighted captains of industry will benefit themselves if they participate as sponsors in providing quality education to all, including the less privileged. K. K. Ammannaya Udupi
