Ullal by-poll passes off peacefully

Mangalore June 3 Polling for the Ullal Assembly by-election went off peacefully on Saturday. According to estimates, 62 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the by-election. The constituency has 1,60,862 voters. Of them, 81,802 are women and 79,060 are men.

Electronic voting machines were used in all the 140 polling booths in the constituency.

The district administration had made heavy security arrangements to ensure a free and fair election.

5 IN FRAY

The by-election was necessitated following the death of U.T. Fareed, a Congress MLA.

Five candidates are in the fray for the by-election. Both the coalition partners - Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP - have fielded their candidates.

Mr Chandrashekhar Uchchil (BJP), Mr Aboobakker Natekal of JD(S), Mr U.T. Khader, son of U.T. Fareed, of the Congress, Mr Balakrishna Shetty of the CPI(M), and Mr Bharatraj Shetty (independent) are the contestants.

The results will be announced on June 5.
