AP mulls rural residential schools

Our Bureau

The objective is to provide corporate-type secondary school education in rural areas.

Hyderabad June 3 With private-run schools hogging the limelight in State-conducted and national-level competitive exams, the Andhra Pradesh Government wants to try an experiment in forging partnerships with the private sector to float `Rural Residential Public Schools.'

Starting from the academic year 2008-09, two such schools will be started in each district, according to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

He said that the objective of establishing such schools was to provide top-of-the-grade corporate-type secondary school education in rural areas.

Each school will have classes from six to 12 under CBSE syllabus, and each class will have three sections.

There will be only 40 students per section; thus, the total students in each school will be 840.

The Chief Minister has said that admission will be restricted to students from rural areas only, since students in the urban areas have many such options.

Dr Reddy also said that ultimately, the aim of the State Government is to upgrade all schools to corporate standards. The Government will allot 25-50 acres for each school and the District Collector will identify the location.

The Chief Minister has suggested to begin the programme with the involvement of institutions such as TTD, Simhachalam, Kanakadurga, Vemulawada and Srisailam Devasthanams, APTransco, distribution companies, APGenco, Singareni Collieries, APMDC, AP Tourism Development Corporations and APSRTC. Later, corporates will be allowed to come in.
