Bid to become third party logistics service provider

Mumbai June 4

Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) inaugurated its first full-fledged Logistics Park at Dronagiri, near Jawaharlal Nehru Port, marking the crossing of another milestone in its efforts to become a complete 3 PL (third party logistics) service provider.

The Union Minister for Agriculture, Mr Sharad Pawar, inaugurated the park.

CWC is planning to further expand its presence as a 3 PL service provider by setting up a string of 22 rail-based logistics parks across the country, including at imported centres like Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Mr Pawar said the corporation was in the process of forming a subsidiary as a lead promoter to carve out logistics-based activity. "The subsidiary company shall be in a position to cater to the needs of the trade for faster and cheaper supply chain management solutions," he said.

Geography

The CWC Logistics Park has been constructed on a 30-hectare plot and is about 15 km from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The facility is being developed in two phases -- the phase-I (12.8 ha) has been completed and commercial operations have begun. Three warehouses of 30,000 sq. ft each have been constructed for import, export and bonded warehousing facilities, along with a fully paved area of 70,000 sq. m. for a container yard, which can handle 10,000 to 12,000 containers per month.

The construction work on the second phase is on in full swing and is likely to be completed in the first quarter of 2008. On completion, the facility will have covered warehouses of 3,00,000 sq ft, which will cater to the diverse requirements of the trade, with cold storage facilities.

The total cost of the project is about Rs 200 crore, out of which Rs 50 crore has been invested towards building the first phase. The remaining cost of Rs 150 crore towards the completion of phase-II will be deployed in the coming years.
