New Delhi June 4 Delhi Metro's Phase-I operations have helped the Capital save Rs 1,167.3 crore till date by saving passenger time, fuel costs, accidents, infrastructure maintenance while reducing capital and operating cost of vehicles, environmental damage.

"The Delhi Metro's environmental and social benefits will help recover the full cost of Phase I of the project by 2013," a Delhi Metro statement said adding that the savings would rise to Rs 2,072.51 crore by year-end.

These benefits were quantified in a study by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).

Since the Metro began operations in December 2002, there has been a progressive reduction in daily vehicle movement as people shifted to Metro for commuting. Till 2006, the Metro has taken the share of 22,697 vehicles and this share is projected to increase approximately to 40,000 for all other modes of travel by the end of 2007.

Fuel saving

Furthermore, the Metro has resulted in reduced consumption of petrol, diesel and CNG.

The reduced consumption in hydrocarbons has resulted in green house gas emission savings of 2,275 tonnes and this saving will be 3,968 tonnes by year-end, it said.

People in the city save 66 minutes every day at an average by travelling to and fro by the Metro which has resulted in a saving of Rs 415 crore up to 2006 as their earning capacity time increases. Delhi Metro has helped in already saving 280 lives up to 2006 which would have been lost if they had travelled on other modes of transport.
